PlatinumHistoryPlatinum was used by the native people of the Americas long before anyone realized that it was something new and undiscovered. When the Spanish conquered the natives, Antonio de Ulloa and Jorge Juan y Santacilia found this metal the natives had been working with and deemed it a new element in 1751. It had different properties than that of silver and gold, as it was much heavier and was nearly impossible to destroy or corrode. In the late 1700s Europeans discovered that it could be used as jewelry and knives. Later in the 1800s people discovered that it had more practical uses as well such as weaponry and energy.
